Three important things about rain gear: it should be waterproof (easier said than done!), it should allow children to move around comfortably, and it should fit over warm layers for those days that are both cold and wet.
Two general options for rain gear are one-piece rain suits (coveralls) or rain sets that include pants and a jacket. One-piece rain suits can be easier and quicker for children to put on and take off which is important during certain times like potty training. Two-piece rain sets are a bit more versatile in that bib pants can be worn on their own during much of the shoulder seasons, protecting clothes underneath from mud or puddles even when it’s not actively raining. Two-piece sets offer more freedom of movement, and the double layer of waterproofing over the child’s torso helps ensure they stay dry.
Lastly, waterproof rain mittens are super helpful during shoulder seasons. Wet hands can become cold even when temperatures are in the 50s. They should be long enough to have a few inches of fabric layer either over or under rain jacket sleeves.
To maintain rain gear’s waterproof outer layer, we recommend hand washing or spot cleaning as much as possible (perhaps with a dedicated cloth or sponge) to avoid putting it into the washing machine or dryer. Hanging rain gear outside in the rain is a great way to wash off mud. If you really need to machine wash it, please use a cold, gentle cycle and hang to dry. Heat from a dryer can easily destroy waterproof layers.
